Hi - I would like to know if it is possible to change the odometer reading on the electronic dash display on the (8th Generation) Mitsubishi Legnum (Estate) or Galant VR4 (Chasis codes EC5W or EC5A) 1996-2002/3.

I have disassembled the dash and just beside a very large chip which is connected to the LCD display there is what looks to be a 8 pin EEPROM chip with the following markings:

93C46CB3
93A631
MAL
ST (logo)

As far as I can figure out from Google this is a Microwire compatible serial access eeprom. Unfortunately the cheap £9 eeprom programmer I got off ebay seems to throw up odd results whenever I try to read it (using PonyProg) so I assume it is protected? Would one of the Diga-Consult models work with this?

Thanks

Hi

DashFixerPro covers this car no problem.

Remove the 93c46 from the board read it and post the dump complete with the current mileage/kms. and someone will correct it for you. Arthur.

Thanks for the info guys. I had assumed one of the many Mileage correction gadgets would work - but getting someone else to do it avoids the fun factor and sense of achievement of doing yourself.

But - I was hoping to avoid desoldering the chip if I could.

I have read around a bit and it seems in-circuit programming of these eeproms should be possible by either using a lower voltage than standard as this adaptor suggests to avoid interference from the MCU or other parts:

http://www.arlabs.com/adapters.htm#IN-CRCUIT%20SERIAL%20EEPROM%20ADAPTER

or by connecting an MCU Reset Line (RST) (presuambly to the microcontroller chip not the eeprom??) somehow:

www.kanda.com/datasheet/serialwb.pdf

Though I don't think that should be necessary since the likes of dashfixer and diga-consult just connect to the eeprom don't they?

I'll try reading with a resistor inline with Vcc to see if that works. If not I'll attempt desoldering.

Cheers, Phil.

Its depend on your programmer that have using,
if you are using a programmer that has an ability to read/write it in-circuit
you don't have to remove the chip

this chip is easy to remove, and as you said at your previous post you try to
read it in Pony programmer, this chip can read by Ponyprog if you remove it
use menu microwire 16 bit --> 9346
for your Pony interface setup, uncheck all box Polarity control lines

If you want an easy job that no need to remove eeprom,
you can buy an odometer profesional tool, most of odometer tools
have ability to read eeprom via in-circuit

But dont waste your money for clone tools if you are a beginner
You cannot learn on clone tools because it has no aftersales support
Clone tools are only for user who can handle it and not wanting a support from the seller

Well, I watched a guide on youtube about how to solder (and more importantly desolder) and got the eeprom off with no problems.

Ponyprog was then able to do the trick and I managed to change the km to miles no problem.

Though in usual style I didn't want to admit defeat and tried to figure out why I couldn't read the eeprom in circuit - so I wired a resistor in the Vcc leg to lower the voltage. Unfortunately I crossed a few wires across pins when I had a power supply connected and it seems I've blown the MCU chip properly!!

Good job it was a spare dash I was practising on! Anyway, on my actual car dash I just removed the chip, reprogrammed with Ponyprog and put it back.

Lesson learnt!

Cheers for the help.

Well your Pony programmer has an ability to do it in circuit
You need only to replace your Pony interface
If you have a knowledge to build a PCB board I can guide you to make
your own interface, I have tested this programmer for a years on some
dash that use serial eeprom memory
