All the main functions will work, no problem. A brand new cluster will not work unless it is coded. Otherwise a used cluster (which is already coded) will work on a different car. You will have the tamperproof light that will be on if the VIN does not match and sometimes a few lights that will be lit because of options that are not present. I.e: if you put a 2001 E39 cluster on a 2005 X5, you might not be able to turn some lights off because the software in the cluster is too old and therefore cannot display features or options that are available on that 2005 x5. Always opt for a cluster of the same year of production of your vehicle or for a newer version.
