How can I determine if my 1998 E39 5 series has it's odometer reading coded in EWS & Key? I understand that this system was deployed for 5er during the 1998 model year.

Thanks for any replies.

Hello,
The best way to find out is to look at the EWS. If it's a white box and it says EWS3 then you have mileage in your keys. From 1998 BMW installed EWS3's in their cars and they record the mileage in the keys; which means you can have an old style key (no colored logo) and still have the mileage in it. Also if you have the feature KM-Check in your Diga-Consult, you can always check that out.

Yes, I'm positive . Once again, the old keys have the mileage only if the car has an EWS3.
Your friend dosen't know it because BMW cannot read those. Their key readers (I think made by Siemens) can only read those with the colored logo. But the GT-1 (BMW Scan tool, used by the techs) is capable to read the EWS and of course its mileage.
