Hello,
I had the opportunity of buying in a scrapyard a complete instrument unit (odometer+all gauges, etc. Question ), that was exactly the same as the one fitted on the car (same design, same connexions, same factory numbers, etc).
Everything works fine : lightings, etc., no 'check engine' nor similar message, mileage appears, etc, everything ok ...
except that ... engine doens't start !
It seems they have a spy in the board computer that check if the unit is original ... does anybody have had the problem and how to solve it "easily" ?
Thanks
Bjorn

It is probably a problem with immobilizer. Is there a flashing security light or a light with a key symbol- that flashes after attempting to start it?

Hi,
No ther's absolutely nothing flashing nor none symbol of any kind.
I'm enquiring by a Saab agent (friend), who does'nt know the problem because he never did this sort of job. I'll let you know.

I've got the answer :
Effectively, if you change the complete dashboard unit, you've to reprogrammate the "dice" (internal computer of the car) to accept the new unit. The code is situated into the unit, not into the "dice" of the car. When an unit is programmated, it's impossible to fit the car with the previous unit without programming the "dice" to accept it again.
The programmation is done only via the Tech2 (Saab agent's mobile computer).
If somebody changes its dashboard unit, no external sign appears, but ... the engine doesn't start.
Clever, isn't it ?

Hello,
Not so clever as this has been used by other manufacturer such VW/Audi for example. The instruement cluster becomes a part of the immobilizer system. Modules talk to each other and if one of those do not answer with correct code the car enfine will not start. Your problem could have been solved also by cloning the microcintroller's eeprom data from the old instrument to the new one. But you need to have such an equipment that can read and write MCU and eeprom memories. Tech2 is used on all makes and models belonging to GM including Saab (since bought by General Motors a couple years ago). Anyway it's good that you were able to find a solution to your problem.

Hello Serge
When you talk about the microcin controller eeprom of the dashboard, do you mention the 93C56 (on this dash it's a 220) that we flash to change odometer values, or is it another eeprom ?
Thanks for help
