I think you should have taken the cluster out and done it clip to chip and worried about the obd lead once the car had gone. Arthur.

There are a few possible reasons why your last attempt didn't work! your OBD cable is faulty, your tool is faulty, the OBD socket on the car is faulty, the cluster could have been replaced with a later version with a 35080 in it, which can only be done clip to chip but yes, if everything is ok you should be able to do it by OBD. If it will not work by OBD, take the cluster out and do it by stripping the cluster and clipping to the eeprom. Get paid for the job and THEN find out what is wrong if anything. Arthur.

Hello Charles,
Assuming that your vehicle has never had the cluster replaced (it's the original one), your production date indicates that the diagnostic port you should use is not the OBD2 but the BMW modic connector under the hood (bonnet). Indeed the K-line is in that 20-pin round connector and not in the OBD2. They removed that round connector and transferred the K-line wire (communication wire) to the OBD2 plug from 2/2000. But make sure that your OBD2 cap is closed when using the under bonnet plug because the OBD2 acts like a breaker.

Hey serge,
Thanks for your reply, though my problem is that it doesnt work with the OBD socket (bonnet)......And so now I may have to remove the cluster, what else can it be.....
Tool is working fine, and obd leads are all good too.
Thanks

It is most likely a replacement cluster with a 35080. If you remove the cluster you will be able to do clip to chip whichever eeprom it is using. Arthur.

In that case, it is as Arthur said, replacement cluster with SW17-up containing a M35080 eeprom.
