I never remove the eeprom and leave it on this is the safest way.

Lift pins 2 & 4 for best results - this operation is always good and safe esp when rainnig.

Ignore the manual it makes no sense.

The battery is best left on and the vehicle connect to mains voltage.

lifting SOIC eeprom pin is risky
you can damage the pin of this eeprom when lifting
The SOIC eeprom has a small package and when you heat the pin
the package also heated and lifting the pin when it is hot will damage this pin and package
this is not the same as you lifted the MCU pin
MCU package is bigger that SOIC and the MCU pin is smoother that SOIC pin

I am not removing eeprom when programming and writing
its depend upon the programmer you are using
Short the crystal to avoid oscillation when applying 5V to the circuit
and it also the same as you remove the eeprom

The only M35080 eeprom I have to remove is the new generation not erasable
It cannot erase with in circuit so you need to remove prior to erase it

But removing 8 pin eeprom is an easy job without risk
than to lifting pin of it

I can remove and return any device without problem
even MCU with 144 pin up or PLCC and BGA device

But I dont remove most 8pin eeprom to save time
