The writing or programming of the new mileage in the keys is done via the EWS (immobilizer). After programming the cluster and installing it back along with the EWS in the vehicle, the key is updated with the new mileage from the cluster via the EWS in a matter of a second, as soon as you turn it to Run position or simply start the car. This feature is a part of the BMW package (which includes programming of cluster, EWS+keys, and Light Control Module).
